Patrick Chan

This whole season has been quite a challenge. Today it's a silver medal, but I think it's more like a gold medal for the effort I put in this season

Patrick Chan was born on December 31st 1990 in Ottawa, Ontario. He is of Han Chinese descent and his Chinese name is Chan Wai- Kuan which is simplified traditional Chinese. His father, Lewis Chan imigrated from Hong Kong as a child, his mother Karen Chan emigrated from Hong Kong at age 20 and now they both make Canada their home. Chan speaks French, English and Cantonese; he also attends to Ecole secondarie Etienne-Brule a French language school in North York, Toronto.

Patrick Chan started Figure Skating at the age of 5. Chan won three consecutive national titles from the pre-novice title 2003, the novice title in 2004, and the junior title in 2005. In the 2005 Canadian Figure Skating Championship he won and earned a trip to the 2005 World Junior Figure Skating Championships. He was ranked 7th place in this event. Then he was 14 and the youngest skater at the event. In the 2006-2007 seasons, he won gold in Montreal and he got 4th in Slovakia. He qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Final. In this event Chan placed 5th. He made his senior national debut at the 2006 Canadian Figure Skating Championships. He placed 7th and earned a trip to the 2006 World Junior Figure Skating Championships, where he placed 6th.

Even though Chan had only won one Junior International Medal he made the choice to move into the Grand Prix in the 2006-2007 season. He was assigned two Grand Prix events. Chan was placed 5th in the 2006 Trophee Eric Bompard where he made his senior international debut. He followed that up by placing 7th in the 2006 NHK Trophy. In Halifax he completed the 2007 Canadian Figure Skating Championship and was placed 5th. This earned him his 3rd consecutive trip to the Junior Worlds where he won a silver medal. This made him the first Canadians men’s skater since 1984 to win a medal at the World Junior Figure Skating Championship.

Chan started the 2007-2008 Grand Prix season at the 2007 Skate America where he won a bronze medal. After that he went to win the 2007 Trophee Eric Bompard. He ranked 5th place at the 2007-2008 Grand Prix Final. After Chan won the 2008 Canadian Figure Skating Championship at age 17, was wildly reported that Chan is now the youngest Canadians men’s champion in history. Then he competed at the 2008 World Figure Skating Championship March 2008. After the short program he was ranked 7th and 11th in the free skating, which put him in 9th overall. In the 2008 World Championship Canada had two spots. Chan placement combined with Jeffrey Buttle, who won the event had earned Canada three spots in the 2009 World figure Skating Championship in the men’s event.

Chan was assigned at the 2008 Skate Canada and at the Trophee Eric Bompard at the beginning of the 2008-2009 season. He won both of and went to the Grand Prix Final where he placed 5th. As the defending champion Chan went to the 2009 Canadian Figure Skating Championship and did a clean short program and placed first in that segment with a score of 88.89 points. He was going into the free skate with a 17.00 point lead. He won the free skate with 165.93 points. Chan had a total of 254.82 points overall with a 48.52 point lead over Vaughn Chipeur who placed 2nd. Chan went to the 2009 Four Continents Championship where he placed 1st in the short program with a total of 88.90 points. He ha a 7.25 point lead over Evan Lysacek, who was second place. At the end of the free skate, he placed 1st with a total of 160.29. He won the championship overall with a total of 249.19. He had a 12.04 lead over Evan Lysecek.

Chan was assigned to go to the 2009 Rostelecom cup and the 2009 Skate Canada International national events for the 2009-2010 Grand Prix series. Due to a gastrocnemius tear in his left calf, he was force to withdraw from the Rostelecom cup event. Fortunately he was able to compete in the Skate Canada International, where he placed 6th with 198.77 points. In January 2010 he competed in the 2010 Canadian Figure Skating Championships. Chan earned 1st in the short program with 90.14 points. He won the free skate with 177.88 points. Chan had a total of 268.02 points overall with 45.92 points over Vaughn Chipeur, who placed 2nd. Chan had set a new record for the event. He went home that night with the gold medal. In the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games Chan had scored 81.12 points in the short program and placed 7th. With a score of 160.30 points, Chan made a new personal best in the long program and place 4th and 5th overall. When Chan competed at the 2010 World Figure Skating Championship, he had placed 2nd in the short program with 87.80 points. He was 1.50 points off from the lead behind Daisuke Takahashi. Chan placed 2nd again with 159.42 points, 8.98 points behind Daisuke Takahashi. With 247.22 points overall he went home with silver medal

Some people see Chan as one of the world’s finest figure skater. We had chose Patrick Chan as our Canadian hero because we think that Chan has become a role model to many figure skaters out there. I bet a lot of people want to be like him and think he is a fantastic figure skater. We hope he continues this awesome job to become the world’s best figure skater. This is why we chose him to be our hero.
