Phillip Kiker

by Molly from Kyle, Texas

My hero is Phillip Kiker, a forever-permanent resident of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Phillip and his partner Marshall have been together for the past 40 years, living in several different houses in the Tuscaloosa area. During those years they had one very popular hair salon that lasted for many years. Phillip now works at another salon while Marshall is at home, dying of liver failure. Marshall is on a liver transplant list, but he's at the bottom for his age, alcohol use, and current smoking. There are several factors going against him and none. My webpage is all about Phillip Kiker and his efforts to save and support the one he loves.

Taking care of someone whether it's supporting them financially, emotionally, or physically can always be difficult. It's just a part of life. The way Phillip Kiker supports his partner and survives it is absolutely remarkable. Phillip works a full-time job and rarely has s day off. When he's not working, he's at home, at the docter, or at the store. He cleans the house, does the dishes, does his and Marshall's laundry, gets Marshall whatever he needs, and takes him to the doctor. Phillip doesn't have time anymore to do anything for himself anymore, not even to go see the doctor himself.

While most people who aren't married usually don't make it when hard times happen, Phillip and Marshall have worked very hard to keep it together. Phillip tries to make the best of the situation he has at hand. The love of his life is dying and there's really nothing he can do. All he can do is work hard and make the best of it. I have no idea how he makes it through each day. Maybe it's just that he's stronger than anyone takes him for or maybe it's that Marshall and him have a love stronger than we realize. Either way, it has probably kept them going through all these years.

One day while my father and Marshall were talking in another room, I walked in to keep Phillip company. I must have came in at the wrong moment. When I walked into their chaotic living room, there was Phillip sitting on the couch crying while looking out the window. I didn't exactly know what to do or what to say, but he took care of that for me. "I'm so sorry honey," he said. I just smiled as politely and understanding as I could and said,"I completely understand." And that was all that needed to be said on that certain subject matter. He quickly changed the subject as Marshall and my father came into the room.

Phillip and Marshall are the two most gorgeous and in-love people I have ever met. As a whole and seperately they are just beautiful people. Some people never get to experience what they've experienced. While some people might agree with it, whether you like it or not it's a great thing to have. All Phillip wants is for Marshall to be okay. Phillip and Marshall will always be remembered by me and whoever else crossed their paths or their stories.

This story takes place over a longer period of time than is even possible to write without writing a book. With that being said, I'm choosing to write about the time that I visited this great man and his partner Marshall. This story takes place in Tuscaloosa, AL of this year, 2007.
