My Grandfather, Paul

by Teo from Buenos Aires

My hero is called Paul and he is Dutch. He is a brave and courageous man. He is also generous and considerate with me.

We call him Paul, Opa. That means grandpa in German. He is my personal hero because in the Second World War, he had to hide with all his family in a very little place, an attic. He had to hide there because he is Jewish so Hitler’s allies wanted to kill him. He could only get out of there at night to get some fresh air and to look for food. If he was lucky, they could make a trap and catch a little animal. If it they weren´t able to do that, he had to eat tulip bulbs. That´s why his favourite flowers are the tulips.

Now Opa is 86 years old and he lives here, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I also admire him because he was very young during the war but still very brave. I would be very scared, I think, I wouldn’t survive. He is married with Karin (Oma) and they have four kids including my dad.

If someone asks me with whom I would compare Opa, I would say Anne Frank. Not only because both were Jewish but both lived in the Second World War, they were very courageous, brave, intelligent, dreamers and fighter because they never gave up.

In short, I love him because if he wouldn’t be so brave and wouldn’t survive the war, I wouldn’t be writing this essay now.
