I did a report on Molly Ludwig known as Molly Pitcher. Molly Pitcher was born in 1754. She grew up with her parents and three brothers on a dairy farm.
One of her brothers was a Patriot who smuggled in sugar to sell for no taxes. Her other brother was fighting in the French and Indian War. Molly's little brother lived with her.
When she was about twenty-two she married a guy named John Hays. He was in the Continental Army and was a gunner, which means he manned the cannons. Molly was really worried he would die, so she told her parents that she was going to help her husband.
It was a hot day and they spotted the British. The battle was called the Fight of Monmouth. When the soldiers were thirsty she gave them water. When her husband fell, because he became too hot, she gave him water. When he did not get up she manned his cannon. When the battle was over George Washington called her to his headquarters and thanked her by giving her the rank of sergeant. Every soldier cheered "HURRAY!" for sergeant Mary Hays.
Molly risked her life to help her husband and her country. She did it to keep here husband safe. Mary was heroic because she helped keep the soldiers from dying of thirst. Mary was also heroic because she manned a cannon and helped defeat the British. She died in 1832.
