Pocahontas

by Lauren from Tecumseh

Listen with your heart, you will understand

My hero is Pocahontas. She was a Indian princess girl, she was born in 1595. She lived in the Tidewater region of Virginia with her dad, Powhatan, the powerful chief of the Algonquian Indians. They named her Matoaka, though she is better known as Pocahontas, which means "Playful One."

In 1607 Pocahontas first met John Smith who was a white man from England. Her dad and friends told her to stay away from him because he was white and he had a gun, but she went anyway. She stopped her dad from killing John Smith and said "If you kill him you have to kill me too. Her father thought she was brave and courageous.

I chose Pocahontas for my hero because she didn't care that John Smith was white or different from her Indian people. She didn't want to fight like her family and friends were. She had courage and she was brave.
