James Knox Polk (1745 - 1849) was a determined, hard working figure. From being elected over Martin Van Buren to successfully waging war against Mexico. His hard work is obvious. Yet he is regarded today by most historians not as great a president but one who missed opportunities. Even though this is true, his pride and determination makes him a great leader and my hero.

Polk was born on a family farm in North Carolina. At the age of ten, the family moved to the frontier of Tennessee. There they built a plantation from the surroundings. Though they did well, the journey ruined Polk's health permanently. James was home-schooled and then enrolled, at eighteen, at a Presbyterian school near Columbia, Tennessee. After that he continued his education at the University of North Carolina. He then studied law, which was to be his life career.

Polk had many careers and campaigns. In 1825, he was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served six terms. He had a close friendship with Andrew Jackson; and with Jackson behind him, he became Speaker of the House in 1835. Then in 1839 became Governor of Tennessee.

Polk also had many accomplishments. In 1844, with the support of his wife, Sarah Childress, he was elected President over Martin Van Buren when initially no one knew him. People kept asking "Who is James K. Polk?" Polk answered the question when he announced of his campaign to gain the land from Texas to the Northwest. Conflicts broke out between America and Mexico. Polk sent U. S. troops who drove deep into Mexico capturing the capitol. Then after signing a treaty ending the war Polk fulfilled the "Manifest Destiny" stretching America's borders from coast to coast.

Even though James K. Polk wasn’t recommended one of the successful presidents, he made a name for himself. His determination and hard work led this country to success. Because of his traits and accomplishments, James Knox Polk is my chosen hero.
