Prometheus

by Claire, Courtney, Elizabeth, Jamison, and Mary Alice from Jack

"Every man has the chance to be a hero. It is his choice to seize the opportunity." -Elizabeth Meads

In this day in time, many people have idols, or people they look up to. One of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology, although he was a god, was Prometheus. He was fascinated by the human race and gave fire to mankind. Zeus, the leader of the gods did not like this and decided that for the rest of eternity, Prometheus would suffer a different death everyday. There are a few heroes similar to Prometheus, who gave back to society as well, such as Dale Earnhardt Sr., Marilyn Monroe, Henry Ford, Audrey Hepburn, and Coco Chanel. Each of these people have given back to society in some way, just as Prometheus gave fire to the humans.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a legendary NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver. He had won a total of seven Winston Cup championships and was Rookie of the year after his first season in the Winston Cup series. He is the only driver to start in 500 Winston Cup Series races and he had seven Winston Cup Championships. On February 18, 2001, the Dale Earnhardt empire would come crashing down at the Daytona 500. In turn three of the last lap, Dale Earnhardt had a wreck that ended his life at the age of 49. Earnhardt's death was the fourth in a nine month period. Although NASCAR lost one of the most legendary drivers in racing history, it gave NASCAR a chance to improve the cars to make them safer to drive. NASCAR safety officials developed the HANS system, or head and neck restriction system, which keeps a drivers' neck from getting a fracture. The seats inside the cars have also been made larger and the impact zones on the cars are larger. Earnhardt's death not only improved racing vehicles, but everyday vehicles as well. Earnhardt was very much like the Greek god Prometheus as far as giving back to society.

Another comparable hero to Prometheus is Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn experienced a troubled childhood and had many insecurities throughout her 36 years of living. Although she was not your typical size zero model, she gave society a different perspective on body image. She was known for being a very confident model and actress. She showed society who was boss.

Henry Ford is also an exceptional hero to compare to Prometheus. Henry Ford not only invented to automobile but also founded a multi-billion dollar American car company. Ford is also known for having created the assembly line. Henry Ford failed twice, but finally was able to establish the Ford motor company. By 1918, about fifty percent of all cars in America were the model T's, created by Henry Ford. After Ford created the assembly line, his production increased greatly as well as raised wages. Henry Ford is an exceptional hero, even in society today.

Another wonderful hero to compare to Prometheus is Audrey Hepburn. Just like Prometheus, Audrey gave back to society. She used her famous image to attract the world's attention to her cause, and traveled the world helping everyone she could. After her acting career slowly ended, and started becoming more involved with UNICEF and went on mission trips to places such as Ethiopia. Audrey later became a Good Will ambassador and received the United States' highest civilian award.

Coco Channel is also an exceptional hero to compare to Prometheus. Coco Chanel gave back to society by giving the world fashionable sense. She was a fashion icon to well known fashion designer during our time. Chanel help women look comfortable but fashionable at the same time. She created unique designs that are still used in the fashion industry today. She changed the world's outlook on fashion and gave them a inspirational influence to continue her amazing career even now.

As one can see, each of these heroes have given back to society in some way as Prometheus gave fire to the humans. Although all of these heroes are no longer with us, the world will never forget the mark they left on this world.
