Queen Latifah

by Brittney from Selden

A hero is somebody you can look up to like a role model. A role model is somebody that is very courageous and very brave. The person I choose as my hero is Queen Latifah. She is very brave. She was born on March 18, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey, under the name Dana Owens. Her parents are Rita Owens and Lance Owens. She also had a brother who died at the age of 24. He was also a Newark New Jersey police officer. Queen Latifah’s brother Winki was her best friend and her soul mate.

Growing up her parents were her the foundation of her values. Even after her parents split up her mother tried to make the best of any situation. Her mother moved to the projects in Newark, New Jersey. She made their apartment feel like a home by decorating it with beautiful art work. This helped install pride in themselves. Living in the projects Rita Owens showed her children that she never stopped improving her life style. She valued her education and showed her children that there was more to life then living in the projects. She spent a lot of time with her family and her children.

Queen Latifah’s father told her just because she’s a girl doesn’t mean it should stop her from doing the things she wants to do. He taught her that life wasn’t always going to be the way she wanted it to be so just to make the best of what life brought you. Queen Latifah used this information when she found out why her parents split up. Her dad was cheating on her mother and doing drugs. She also found out that she had other half brother and sisters.

When Queen Latifah found out she had lost her brother in the motorcycle accident she was devastated. He was her protector and her soul mate. Her brother was the strongest relationship in her life. Her brother showed her unconditional love. Winki showed her what a good man was. One of Queen Latifah's biggest assets is her confidence. Her confidence helped her overcome her fears through the years. Queen Latifah has learned change like the woman she has become today. She stepped up to any and all challenges and has overcome her biggest fears.

Why I choose Queen Latifah as my hero is because I think that I have a lot of the same qualities as her. My Mother has also given me the same values and foundation like her mother did. I hope to be as successful as her. I don’t want to be famous. I just want to be able to step up to challenges and conquer my fears the way she did, and not let my fears get the best of me.
