Ruth Kluger

Ruth Kluger was the hero I picked because she had three qualities that made her a hero. She was organized, courageous, and honorable. She was a hero because she saved lives. She saved the lives of Jews during World War 2. She accomplished this huge task by smuggling Jews on ships into Palestine.

First, my hero was organized. She was always making plans and coming up with strategies to help the Jews get into Palestine. When there was a big problem with the sailors getting drunk and not being able to sail the ship into Palestine, she called only the people that she could trust to help her. The person that leased her the ship was getting very angry so she decided to use that against him by telling him that he was not getting his ship back unless he sent help to get the sailors back in order. She also used the only money that she had, which she was supposed to pay the leaser with, to persuade the sailors to sail the ship into Palestine.

Next, she was courageous. When she got a call telling her that she had to go and get the ship's sailors back in line, she didn’t back down. The first thing she did was to call on the people that she trusted. She persevered and overcame her fear by setting out on an adventure to save thousands of Jews. The town where they stayed didn’t have a hotel so she stayed in a shed that had no heat, no bathroom, and little water and food. She faced the sailors with courage and didn’t back away with fear of dying. When she signed up to be part of this organization, they told her that if she was ever captured they would not rescue her. They told her that she had a very high risk of being killed and she still signed up.

Finally, Ruth was honorable. She put everyone else first and she never took anything for herself. Whenever they ate she made sure everyone had food before she did. She gave the money she had to the people that had none so that they could buy food and water. When they congratulated her, she didn’t brag or take all the glory, she just simply was honorable and said thank you.

Ruth Kluger was an honorable, courageous, and organized person. She was a hero because of the things she did to save the Jews from Hitler.

The Secret Ship by Ruth Kluger and Peggy Mann

" It is an impossible situation. A secret ship carrying hundreds of illegal Jewish emigrants to Palestine is stuck in the icebound port of Balchik, Rumania. The sailors - Greek and Turkish pirates - have mutinied and are running drunk through the streets. Town authorities have declared that the ship must sail at once. But, if it does, hundreds more Jews still on their way to Balchik will perish at the hands of the Nazis. What is the solution to the problem? There is none, and yet there must be if the lives of these innocent men, women and children are to be saved. Everything rests in the hands of the beautiful redhead, Ruth Kluger. She looks like a teen-ager, yet she is really a member of the Mossad, a secret organization formed to get Jews out of Hitler's Europe. Ruth is a young woman like any other - she likes to read books, go to parties, see her fiance, Stefan. But as a member of the Mossad, she can have no personal life. Instead of going out on dates, she finds herself tramping through the freezing snow to do the impossible - to get the secret ship out of the harbor and on its way to Palestine - before it is too late! ... packed with emotion, suspense, and danger."
