Richard Colson Baker (MGK)

by Terra from Swanton

"Don't ever look down, be comfortable with who you are, our flaws are what makes us perfect."

A hero to me is someone who makes a difference. Someone who changes people's lives, someone who inspires you to do better. A hero is someone who has courage and isn't afraid to stand out and be themselves. There are heroes all around us, some known more than others.

My hero is Richard Colson Baker, better known as Machine Gun Kelly or MGK. MGK lived all over the globe moving from house to house switching from school to school. MGK moved to Cleveland, Ohio his freshmen year. This is where his music career really kicked off. MGK has changed many people's lives. Giving people hope for a better day. He's saved many lives with his music and inspired tons of people.

My favorite song by MGK is "Swing Life Away." This song is so inspiring because the lyrics just speak to me. My favorite lines of lyrics from this song are "Am I loud and clear? Or do I gotta scream like I did every day when I was a troubled teen, huh? Do you want to know my past and see every single scar and know what they mean, huh? "I can relate to mostly everything in this song that's why it's my favorite. When singing this song you can just hear the emotion in his voice and know that he's singing from the heart. Another one of my favorite songs by him is "See My Tears" because the lyrics are so powerful and heart touching. My favorite lines from these lyrics are "And nowadays my little girl won't have to work, moved her out the hood. Look man, I been through it all, and Ima be dammed if I got this far, and I let them strip me of this message let these haters take my heart. This for the ones that had it hard, the ones like me, the underdogs" These two songs are more than just lyrics to me. They give me hope. They remind me that no matter how bad life gets you just gotta stay strong.

I chose MGK as my hero because his music changed my life and dug my out of this state of depression. His music gave me a hope when I had none. His music gave me a reason to stay alive when I couldn't find a reason too. MGK has inspired me in a way that no one else could. I can relate to MGK in many ways. We both came from a broken family, struggled with school and addiction. MGK is for the hustlers, for the people who came from nothing but know they can make it and be something. To me MGK isn't just a person who writes music and spits beats. MGK is the guy who basically saved me from myself.

Music is much more than just lyrics. It inspires people and gives people hope. Music changes people's lives. And in some cases like mine, it saves lives.
