Dr. Roberta Bondar was the first Canadian woman who went into space. She made girls believe that they can do what boys can do. She knew that she wanted to be an astronaut when she was eight years old. Dr. Roberta promotes physical fitness, environmental issues, and girls doing mathematics and science. Roberta Bondar was one of the six Canadians chosen for astronaut training in 1983. Dr. Roberta went into space January 22-33, 1992. She believed you don't have to be a boy to go into space.
Dr. Roberta Bondar was born in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, on December 4, 1945. Her proud parents Edward and Mildred Bondar always encouraged her and her older sister Barbara to do their best in numerous activities. She graduated in 1968 from Guelph University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology and Agriculture; in 1971 she received a Master of Science Degree in Experimental Pathology from the University of Western Ontario; following that, in 1974 she received a Doctorate in Neurobiology from the the University of Toronto, a Doctor of Medicine Degree from McMaster University in 1977, and admittance as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in neurology in 1981. This proves that education is extremely important to achieve your dreams and aspirations.
Dr. Roberta's character traits are courage, responsibility and cooperation. She has courage by showing that girls should be treated the same as boys. She is responsible because she finished all her work. She has cooperation because she worked with other astronauts in space. My hero is very smart, and that influences me to be as smart as her. My hero is confident because she knew that she was going to be the first Canadian woman astronaut. So that influences me to be confident. She inspires me and other people to do whatever you want. The distance Dr. Roberta and her crew flew was 3,360 million miles (5,407 million km).
Dr. Roberta said each goal attained was like a new badge. This taught me to see goals and achieve them, and it means you shouldn't give up on your goals and always achieve them. Dr. Roberta's actions were that she completed some of the colleges and university in Canada. I wish I was like Dr. Roberta. Dr. Roberta was a very devoted person. She went into a field where there were almost no girls. She had courage to do that. Dr. Roberta landed on Runway 22, Edwards Air Force Base, California. The date they landed was January 30, 1992, 16h 08m 16s.
At the beginning I thought that she was just the first Canadian woman to go up into space, but she did more than being an astronaut. I found out that she was a pilot, doctor, author, photographer (book names, landscape of dreams and passionate vision) and that she did a lot of volunteer work to follow her dreams. My hero was scientific and she studied a lot about space. She wanted to become the 1st Canadian female to go into space and she achieved it in 1992 at the age of 47.
