Ray Douglas Bradbury is an amazingly fascinating man. I decided to research him in “Biography Today”. I chose him because he is an author of the great science fiction, which I think is extraordinary.

Even the simplest beginnings can result in greatness. Ray was born on August 22, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois to Mr. Leonard Spaulding Bradbury, and Mrs. Esther (Moberg) Bradbury. His father, Leonard, was a telephone lineman, and his mother stayed home. He originally had two older brothers, Leonard and Samuel (who were twins), and a younger sister, Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Samuel and Elizabeth both passed at a young age which left Leonard, also called Skip, and Ray, called Shorty. At the age of eight, Ray got the whooping cough, it lasted three weeks. During this time his mother read him frightening stories of Edgar Allen Poe this help lead him in the direction of science fiction. His aunt Neva, an artist and a costume designer, also inspired a lot of Ray’s ideas and imagination by dressing him in monster costumes and reading him the Oz books by Frank L. Baum. He especially like circuses and carnivals, when he was twelve he went to the Dill Brothers carnival and there he had a memory he’ll never forget. Mr. Electro sat in an electric chair with ten million volts of electricity rushing through his body. Then, Mr. Electro touched Bradbury with his electric sword proclaiming “Live forever!” Ray was married to Maggie McClure on September 27 in the year 1947. They had four daughters, Susan, Ramona, Bettina, and Alexandra, and they also now have eight grandchildren. He has been pretty successful in his still-going long life.

Without education there’s no way Mr. Bradbury would be where he is today. Ray went to quite a few different elementary schools in Waukegan and Tucson. For middle school he went to Berendo Junior High, and for high school, Los Angeles High School. Bradbury really encourages self teaching. He spent a lot of time in a library just reading away and learning.

Ray Bradbury has been a tremendously productive writer over his authoring career He has written so many great novels, and short stories. By the time he was twenty-three his stories were being published in magazines like, Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, Captain Future, and Astounding Science Fiction. Although, his earliest works are the most recognized such as The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

This man is a hero to many. Ray’s suspenseful, thrilling, science fiction stories are known and admired still to this very day. Bradbury has written and published tons of novel, short stories, plays, musicals, films, poems, and even essays. He is still writing too at age ninety. I enjoy his creations and countless people around the world enjoy his writings also.
