Ruby Bridges

by Gabi from Ilion

A hero is someone who helps someone or something. A hero helps people with things they need help with. Ruby Bridges is a hero to me because she is the reason both blacks and whites can live together fairly. She is the reason we have all come together.

Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi on September 8,1954. Her parents names are Abon and Lucille Bridges.  She went to school at William Frantz Elementary School. Ruby was six when she started school at William Frantz Elementary. Less then two percent of southern schools had been integrated by 1957. The city was given a deadline for schools to be integrated by September 1960. Her family moved to the Old Seaport City in New Orleans in 1958.  The first school she went to was Johnson Lockett Elementary School. She said when she was older and still in Johnson Lockett school was that "what I didn't know in kindergarten was that federal court in New Orleans was about to force two white public schools to admit black students" (Bridges).  What she means is that she didn't know they weren't allowed to have whites and blacks together until she found out that the federal courts were forcing the schools to admit colored students. She was one of several students to take a test. Only six of them passed a test. She was one of them. They had to take a test to see if they could go to a white public school.

Ruby Bridges is a hero because she did many important things in history. One thing she did is having white and black and other races come together . She made it so that people could be free and not be treated badly. People got treated badly because of what color they are not for how they act or how they respect others. She got treated badly because of her skin color not how she treated others.

In her later life Ruby Bridges continues to make a difference. She is making a difference  by going around the world and telling about how she got treated. She goes and tells about her childhood. Her childhood was not the greatest but she did get treated good by her teacher. Her teacher's name was Mrs. Henry. She treated Ruby like she treated any other student.

In conclusion, we see how Ruby Bridges made a difference in so many people's lives. She stood up for her rights and was not afraid of anything.
