Raul Salvador Buelvas

by Catherine

My hero is Raul Salvador Buelvas. I have known him my whole life. We carpooled together also our dads are partners at work and our sisters are best friends. Raul went to Duke University, his favorite color was blue, and he was born on July 1, 1993 in Rochester, Minnesota but moved to Savannah, GA. He passed away at the age of 18, on December 25, 2011. Raul is my hero because he battled cancer for 6 long years, and did not let it control his life. He was also active, played guitar and pushed the pedal to the medal, not letting an illness get to him. Last Raul got into Duke because he was so smart.

My hero loved and cared for everybody, he even made a society called "Teens Hope" for teens with cancer. I remember I used to ask him homework questions on the way home from school, and he knew every answer and how to help me. I do not know how he survived two car rides a day with only girls. I would always love to go into their playroom because of all the roller coasters and Lego sets that Raul would spend hours working on. These are just a few things Raul accomplished in his life.

Raul is both similar to and different from ancient Greek heroes. He was like ancient Greek heroes because he was always ready for a difficult challenge like Heracles, but he was not like them because he did not fight monsters except on video games. Raul was magical in many ways but the special reason was that he used his heart to touch people's lives, even the people he did not know. My hero Raul Salvador Buelvas was a kind and loving person, and I am so glad I knew him.
