Roald was born in Llandaff Wales in 1916, September 13 to be exact. He had three sisters, one stepbrother, and one stepsister. When he was three his oldest sister Astri was only seven and died from appendicitis. A couple of months later his father got fatally sick with pneumonia. Because his favorite child (Astri) died, he felt no need to go on any longer, so he let himself go. But having only one arm probably didn’t help the struggle. If they had been more medically advanced like we are today, a dose of penicillin probably could have saved them. Think of what a disaster this would be to you. I mean, think of having five children to look after and one more on the way in two months!

When Roald was six, he went to Kindergarten at a catholic school run by two nuns, and when he was seven his mother decided to take him out of kindergarten and put him in Llandaff Cathedral School. He went to Llandaff for two years. He left the school because his mother didn’t agree with the way the school was run. After Roald left, Llandaff Cathedral he was put in boarding school.

Some struggles started to occur at an early age for Roald. When Roald was three, his dad died and, even before he died, Roald couldn’t do that much with his father because his dad only had one arm. Also, when Roald went to Llandaff Cathedral School he was beat by the principal as a punishment. After that his mother put him in the boarding school where he got very home sick.

I admire Roald’s honesty and bravery. When he and his friends devised a plan to get back at Mrs. Pratchett, the mean owner of their favorite candy shop, he took the punishment from the headmaster and told his mother what happened when he was home. I also think Roald was very honest when he made this quote: "An autobiography is a book a person writes about his own life and it is usually full of all sorts of boring details."

Roald - Adulthood as a writer (famouspoetsandpoems.com/pictures/roald_dahl.jpg) |
Roald Dahl is an inspiration to always tell the truth no matter how scared you are or no matter how much trouble you are in. For instance when he was beat by the headmaster, he told his mother the truth about what he did, and how he was punished knowing that he could get in trouble with his mother for being disrespectful and for sneaking the rat in the jar. He also knew there was a risk he could get in trouble with the headmaster for telling his mother he got beat. And the headmaster could beat him again for telling. I think honesty is an honorable and respectable trait, a trait that he had acquired at a very young age. He is currently dead, but his books are great reminders of events that happened in his life; you just have to read between the lines.
