Rosa Parks

by Alan from Marietta

Rosa Parks was born in February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama, United States. She married Raymond Parks. Raymond convinced Rosa to go back to high school to get a diploma. She later became a member of Montgomery's National Association For The Advancement of colored people(NAACP). She also fought for racism.

In December 1,1955 she refused to give up her seat to a white man. It was a violation of the city's racial segregation ordinances. Rosa Parks was arrested for that. Because of her bravery she set a good role model to the world, then they started to boycott. She is now known to be called "Mother of the Civil Rights movement."

In 1957 Parks moved with her husband and mother to Detroit. In 1965-1988 she was a member of the staff in Michigan Congressman John Conyers, Jr. She was still a member of NAACP. In 1987 Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development to train young people. She had numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Rosa Parks is my hero because she was brave enough to stand up for herself.
