Doctor Robert Sheridan,
Knight in Shining Armor... of the People

by Austin from Glenbrook Middle School

“The conventional definition of management is getting work done through people, but real management is developing people through work.”

Some people pick heroes for the wrong reasons, but I believe mine is a real hero. My hero is an amazing doctor that saves lives every day. I chose him, because he made some great contributions for my family. His name is Doctor Robert Sheridan.

Doctor Sheridan graduated from Boston University in 1979, then he went to college for six more years. He attended school with a military scholarship. Doctor Sheridan completed training in general surgery at Walter Reed in 1986. He served as a general surgeon in Europe, Central America, and Colorado. He trained at the Army Institute of Surgical Research (the army burn unit) in San Antonio. In fact, he was promoted a lieutenant colonel, while serving in Germany as the burn triage officer in support of Operation Desert Storm. He left the Institute of Surgical Research and joined the Massachusetts General Hospital Burn Trauma Services and the Shriners Hospital For Children.

Shriners Hospital helps children with burns. They make the burns that people have as invisible as possible. The amazing doctors, like Doctor Sheridan, save lives every day. All the nurses and doctors are very nice, respectful, and smart.

Doctor Sheridan made two great contributions for my family. In fact, one was on Thanksgiving Day. On Thanksgiving Day 2002, my sister reached over to wash her hands in the bathroom, and candles on the sink caught her arm on fire. She almost died. She got rushed to the local hospital. The next day she got transferred to Shriner's Hospital in Boston. Doctor Sheridan completed a successful surgery on her.

The other great contribution he made for my family was that he saved my dad’s friend. In April 2008, there was an explosion at Spartan Break And Muffler. My dad’s friend, George, was helping a worker take a gas tank down from a car. Nearby, another worker was welding. The heat from the welding tool set the fumes coming from the gasoline tank on fire. The tank exploded. George got badly burned. He almost died. He got rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Doctor Sheridan completed major surgery on George, and helped save his life.

Doctor Sheridan is my hero, because he is a hard-working, friendly man that saved two people that I care about. I give him many thanks. I think he deserves a pat on the back.
