Richard Winters is my hero because he is brave and heroic. He did his duties in World War II. He is my hero because of the deeds he did and the bravery and courage he showed. He was given four medals including the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Service Cross during his duty with Easy Company. Winters and Easy Company captured the rest of some 200 German soldiers, leading to the defeat of a German Battalion. Thus, they contributed a lot to the opening of an inland destination for Brig Gen Roosevelt and the 4th Division. Captain Winters is not only brave but his love for his fellow soldiers and brothers and his country is great. He deserves to be one of the greatest Hero of the United States of America.
He participated in the D-Day invasion as a member of Easy Company of the US airbourne paratrooperdivison. He jumped into Normandy as a lieutenant and when the war ended a year later he earned the position of major. He won the Distinguished Service Cross on D-Day and later exposed by the book "Band of Brothers," the HBO teleminiseries. He is the man who led the Band of Brothers. The book and the movie that touched my heart continue to make me proud of what Winters and his men did. He received four medals following the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and the WWII Victory Medal, he remained the biggest brother in the Band of Brothers after the effort and heroic duties he made during the war and after the war which continues to inspire me and that is why he is my hero.
Winters was born in January 21,1918 and grew up in Pennsylvania. As an original member of Easy Company, Richard began his service as a platoon leader when one of his lieutenants resigned. During the war, the 101st airborne division was deployed to D-day on June 6,1944. Winters was awarded for the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross for leading an assault on German artillery. In Holland, on September 1944, he was then promoted into a higher rank after he lead an attack with 20 members of easy company against a force of 200 German soldiers. On December 15, 1994 Captain Winters and Easy Company held a line at the small town of Foy near Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, then he was promoted to the rank of Major following the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war Winters worked briefly with his war time friends and participated in the Korean War to train soldiers for the U.S army. Retiring to Pennsylvania, Winters would become an icon of "The Greatest Generation."
His bravery and good judgment made him a legend. He supported the Korean war. As portrayed in the HBO miniseries directed by award winning Steven Spielberg. based on the book Band of Brothers of Stephen Ambrose in his 1992 book. From the book to the screen Captain Winters gave me the idea on what it takes to deal with fighting enemies using smart tactics and saving the troops at the same time and being heroic. His Bravery and courageous acts are truly heroic. I thank Richard Winters and all his fellow soldiers for these heroic war tales have always made a difference in this world. Some live to tell the story and some need the story told for them, but you all count. Thank you all for your sacrifice to change the world history, from the trenches and the frontlines, Winters is truly the war hero of WWII.
