Rachel Ann Koger

by Brittni from Hazel Green

She always tells me to be the best I can be, let others think the best of me, and to keep God on my side.

It was almost failure. That's what we thought. It was about a year ago in the dentist parking lot. And then it happened...she was sitting in her car and suddenly she became very confused and her left side was paralyzed. A stranger was walking by about an hour later and saw her crying and went to get help, they instantly called 911. Sirens were heard within minutes. She was rushed to the emergency room and was soon placed in NICU. Phone calls were made. It was a stroke. The moment I saw her in that hospital bed I broke down in tears.

The "she" I am talking about is my grandmother, also known as "Maw-Maw" the most honest, sweetest, most heroic person I have ever met, Rachel Ann Koger. If I could describe "Maw-Maw" I would have to say that she is a very loyal, trustworthy, strong and determined Christian who would do anything for anyone. And to me those are great qualities for a hero to have.

One thing "Maw-Maw" always tells me is to be a good girl, and let people think the best of me, and to always keep God on my side. But in this situation, I would have to say that God was on her side. We never thought that she would have made it this long, but we thank God everyday that she has. Anyone that has ever met her would definitely describe her as a hero. She has dealt with many crises in her life but has overcome the majority of them. She has lived a good life, and I am sure that she is very thankful for every second of it. My grandmother has been very blessed, but she has been blessed to be a hero.
