education: Graduated from Westlake High School, Los Angeles, California, in 1968; received from Stanford University a bachelor of science in Physics and a bachelor of arts in English in 1973, and master of science and doctorate degrees in Physics in 1975 and 1978.
Dr. Ride was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978. In August 1979, she completed a 1-year training and evaluation period, making her able for assignment as a mission specialist on future Space Shuttle flight crews. She performed as an on-orbit capsule communicator on the STS-2 and STS-3 missions.
Sally Ride is my hero because she was the first woman in space. Also because she told us girls to try our hardest to do what we want to do. It is amazing that she could go up into space as the first girl in space because only boys have ever done anything up in space so that is why Sally Ride's my hero. Because she followed her dreams and did what she wanted to do.
