Heroes are people who make a difference in someone's life. My heroes are my grandparents, Frank and Becky Riley. They have been married for fifty years. They are both very religious and have always participated in their church's activities. They live in Blythewood, South Carolina, and they are close with many, many people in their town and church. My grandmother has gone to this same church all of her life. She and my grandfather are friends with many of the people there. They both fit the qualities of a hero very well.
My grandparents have always been very fun, caring, and loving. Many people love and respect them because of this attitude. My grandfather even received the Order of the Palmetto, a special award given to certain South Carolinians. He had lung cancer for a couple of months and then had surgery. The whole time he still had a positive attitude, and always had hope. My grandmother was beside him the whole way. She gave up a lot of her time and opportunities to be with him. The surgery was successful, but he still had to have chemotherapy and radiation, which took away a lot of his energy. He couldn't taste many things and was always tired. They both stood strong. They are so loving, and would give up anything for their family and friends.
My grandfather was born in 1932, and my grandmother was born in 1934. They both grew up around the Blythewood and Columbia area. They met in high school. They love the outdoors, especially the beach and their garden. Spending time outdoors is one of their major hobbies. They both have some different interests, but that is what got them together.
We go to their house a lot, and they always make us feel extremely welcome. They come to almost all events that my brother and I are in. They are willing to help out and take care of us in any situation, even at the last minute. Their friends and family love and respect them very much. I am proud to be the granddaughter of such wonderful grandparents!
