Betsy Ross

by Natalee from Laguna Beach

My hero is Betsy Ross. She was born on January 1, 1752. She was educated in public school until she was twelve when she became an apprentice for an upholstery shop. She is famous because later in her life George Washington asked her to sew a flag with the Continental Colors for the new nation. She said yes.

Betsy used the first five pointed star and used them on a flag designed by Francis Hopkinson. She put thirteen white stars in a circle on a blue background and thirteen stripes that were red and white that represented the thirteen colonies. George Washington liked her work a lot. Then he asked her about a contest. She said she wouldn't mind about a contest.

Betsy's flag was entered in a contest and she hoped her flag would win because she wanted to support our country. When she found out her flag had won George Washington told her she had to make a lot more flags. Her actions are heroic to me because her flag represented our country. Our flag is still similar to the one she made. It still represents our country.

She impacted my life because if it wasn't for her we wouldn't be able to make a five pointed star and we wouldn't have had a flag to represent our country back then. During her life she had three husbands and seven children. She retired from her upholstery shop life in her 70's. She died when she was 84 on January 30, 1836. I think Betsy Ross had a great life.

My hero is Betsy Ross and I picked her because if it wasn't for her we wouldn't be saying the pledge to the flag.I think she is very interesting because she made the flag for our country.
