Stephanie Belizaire

by Jennifer from Wyandanch

There's this wonderful woman that I've chosen to call my hero. She is an incredible mother, nurse and cook. She spent most of her life taking care of her children including me, my brother and sister. I have to say, she is doing a good job at it. Life wasn't easy for her, it was both good and bad. She's had her ups and downs , flaws and successes but she is still an amazing woman. That woman is my mother and her name is Stephanie Belizaire.

My mom was born in Haiti. She was the youngest among the siblings. Born on June 2nd to Reginald and Celine Belizaire, when she was young, her dad died leaving behind, her brothers & sisters, her mother and herself. She did not graduate from high school and did not attend college. At the age of 17, she gave birth to my older brother. Later, at the age of 18, she had my sister. At that time she moved in with my aunt and my aunt supported her. Since my aunt was a school teacher of a private school, my mother lived a pretty wealthy life from that point on.

As the years passed , my mother decided to move to New York to start a career. She got her GED and then she attended nursing school at St. Paul's in Queens, NY. Within two years, she earned an Associate degree in nursing. She moved further out in Long Island & lived in an apartment in Amityville. She later found a job working at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Bethpage. Just recently she became a U.S citizen.

The reason why my mother is my hero is because she is good at what she does. I've seen her come home every night telling stories about what she saw at work. I wondered what it would be like and even thought about becoming a nurse when I'm older. My mother inspired me. I also admire her because of her confidence. A confident person is a good role model ! She is definitely someone people can look up to. She is caring and has self-esteem without being cocky or conceited.

My mother Stephanie sets a good example for me, she made me realize that being like everyone else can lead you in the wrong direction. She taught me that being kind is the right thing to do even if you don't like someone, your head might be saying "hate" but don't let your heart hold that negative anger towards them. If you hurt someone else, what kind of a person does that make you? I am glad to have Stephanie as my mother, she is a positive influence. She made a success of her life and has been able to pass on that motivation to the rest of the family. Not many people who come from Haiti have accomplished what she has.
