Sitting Bull

by Navi from Williamsville

Sitting Bull. Do you know who he is? He is a hero. Sitting Bull is a hero because he fought for what he wanted even though the odds were against him. Sitting Bull also had an interesting life. Sitting Bull or Tatanka-Tyotanka was born in 1834 and was first named Jumping Badger then it was changed to Slow. After that, he received his father's name Sitting Bull, later, at age fourteen, during a daring feat in battle. Soon at 1857 he became a tribal war chief. Later, he became supreme chief in 1869.When Sitting Bull was a kid his name was Jumping Badger then his name was changed to Slow because he liked to think about things slowly like eating and drinking. Then in battle he received his father's name when he killed a Crow (a human enemy not a real crow). Also Sitting Bull's dad Jumping Bull died in battle and that was a terrible loss to Sitting Bull. He also adopted Annie Oakley who he nicknamed "Little Sure Shot" and a boy named Hohe also another boy named One Bull and he married a woman named Light Hair and had an infant son who both died. In the end, Sitting Bull and his adopted son were killed on December 15, 1890 when Sitting Bull's friends tried saving him from being arrested.

Sitting Bull also had to face was challenges. Specific challenges Sitting Bull faced were chiefs because sometimes the hostile chiefs wanted to dual Sitting Bull and in these duels it is very easy to die because in duels the enemy knows where you are and also you have limited defense because you use guns and there is limited cover to hide in. Another problem was the wachisu or the white men because there were so many of them and they had mortars and better weaponry and they also had armor stronger than animal hides. So what do you think a Native American will do? What a Native American would probably do is go into shock! Another challenge he faced was lieutenant colonel George A. Custer because the white people soon made Sitting Bull needed to be KIA (killed in action) because people thought that Sitting Bull actually killed him even though he was just the leading medicine man there.

Sitting Bull also had accomplishments. Some accomplishments sitting Bull had was been was becoming a warrior and becoming a shaman and to become a shaman you had to be in the ceremony called the "Piercing of the Heart" where sharp sticks were put under the muscles of the chest and then you have to be hung from a pole. Another accomplishment he had was becoming supreme chief of the Sioux tribes. One more accomplishment is dueling two hostile chiefs and living to tell the tale. Sitting Bull also fought the wachisu so other Native Americans can live. Some awards Sitting Bull had was collecting the scalps of dead enemy's because Native Americans believed that it's honorable to take the scalp of a dead body if the person who got killed fought bravely or very well or was very important. Another award Sitting Bull got was first a shield, then a lance, and a single white feather and the name Sitting Bull. Two more awards he got were two red feathers because he got two wounds and the Lakota prized strength as much as bravery. Another accomplishment Sitting Bull had was being in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show where he adopted Annie Oakley, the trick shooter, and at the end of the Wild West show Buffalo Bill or William F. Cody gifted Sitting Bull with a circus pony and a white hat. Sitting Bull's nephew White bull is also believed to have killed George Custer. Some people also thought that Sitting Bull was the leader at the Battle of Little Bighorn (the day that Custer died) on June 25 and 26, 1867 even though he was just the leading medicine man at that battle.

Sitting Bull had good traits and qualities. One trait Sitting Bull has is bravery because he dueled every chief that wanted to duel him and also during a battle with the Flatheads he got on a horse and tested the Flathead's accuracy and he was not scared to do so. Another trait Sitting Bull has is being wise because he helped make a plan to avenge the Sand Creek Massacre (A village was peaceful but soldiers killed them all). Also, another quality Sitting Bull has is believing in the Great Spirit Wakatanka because in a middle of a battle he took out a pipe and went to the middle of a battlefield and smoked a pipe where he can easily be shot but he smoked on with only 4 brave men. I think that a young person might learn that you should fight for something you want until you get it or until there is no way to get what you want and another thing he might learn is if you fight something new you might need a new tactic and that if you believe in something you should not stop believing.

As you can see, a people's dream died there on December 15, 1890 (a quote from a survivor who tried to save Sitting Bull.)
