Sarah Dessen

by Kayla from Mission Viejo

"There comes a time when the world gets quiet and the only thing left is your own heart. So you'd better learn the sound of it. Otherwise you'll never understand what it's saying."

I first became aware of my hero about three or four years ago when my mother had bought me one of her books. She had said a girl that she worked with thought I might like to read them since they were about teens around my age. She was right. I was hooked on the books in no time, they seem so real and interesting to me. What attracts me the most to Sarah is the ways she keeps the stories realistic. There is none of the happily ever after stuff you usually read in children stories. I have always thought of becoming a writer but never actually considered it in my top five picks until I read my hero’s books.

Writing had always been apart of Sarah’s life; both of her parents were teachers and fully supported her with her writing career. Now Sarah is a writer and an English teacher at a University near her home. She attended college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She graduated with a major in English and a minor in creative writing. Sarah makes a percentage profit of how many books she sells and however many pages she writes, she gives some to her agent.

Sarah loved to read ever since she was a little girl she was given a typewriter for a birthday and started writing her own short stories since then. She always had a big group of girl friends that gave her ideas on what to write about. This helped her out a lot because she was able to take some of her real life stories and make them into novels for young teens. In high school Sarah was known to “hang out” with the wrong crowd and not receive the best grades, but Sarah knew that she was going to graduate and move on into bigger and better things in life because she had talent and she intended to put it to good use. Sure enough after high school Sarah was accepted into a good college and graduated with honors.

Sarah’s contribution to society has been by making public appearances, attending festivals and library organizations to help children receive free books. She promotes her books by having web videos and special promotions that help send a percentage of a profit to children organizations. On a personal level I would also say Sarah Dessen’s books also help out teens that often struggle with conflicts in real life. Her novels can give a teen a different outlook to a situation that they have encountered in life.

My high school goals are to challenge myself by take AP courses, getting involved with my high school, and taking some creative writing classes to see where my writing may come in handy more often. My overall goals in high school are to graduate with honors with at least a 4.0 or higher and go off to a University and start my career possibly as a writer. My life goals are to start a family and be able to supply my children with everything they need in order to be successful in life. I want to be able to go out on vacation every so often and have no worries about money or not having enough food to feed my family.
