"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."(George Bernard Shepard). This is what Stephen Hawking's life seemed based around, because he was always given the short stick in life until he pursued his interest in science and made a name for himself. Stephen Hawking is now known as a modern day Einstein and a hero who survived ALS. Stephen Hawking was always interested in science and was at the top of his class, because of this he got his choice of colleges; Stephen Hawking then continued to become a theoretical physicist. Stephen Hawking left his imprint in the hearts of others through his perseverance with a horrible disease called ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, and his outside the box thinking backed by his high degree math and science.

Hawking's intelligence was undisputed; He revealed things that even the giants of science such as Einstein and Edison could not. Stephen Hawking began to theorize the beginning of the universe; "In the 1980s, his work was beginning to lead him to question the Big Bang theory, which most other scientists were accepting as the probable origin of the universe"(Lee Lerner). Other scientists thought that the Big Bang was the most probable reason for the beginning of the universe. Just as scientists hundreds years ago that proved that the earth was round not flat; Hawking uncovered a new theory that sparked countless new ideas that no other was able think of. Trying to prove the world wrong and teach us the truth Hawking looked towards the darkest and most mysterious corners of the universe to uncover new theories and ideas: "Hawking and other scientists turned their attention to gravitational interactions and began to work on a non quantum theory of relativity. Although this application has had limited success, Hawking discovered that black holes are not necessarily "black," but do emit energy."(Dave Mote). Although some of his ideas have had mixed results, Hawking usually turned up with some results, bringing new intelligence to these mysterious black holes. Hawking's perseverance and striving to learn more about our universe helped enlighten the world through his work and effort.

During his work on the science that worked behind the universe, Hawking hit a brick wall when he was diagnosed with ALS. Although he was diagnosed with such a terrible disease, Hawking refused to let it stop him and his dreams, "Hawking claimed that rather than hampering his progress, his disabilities had 'helped me in a way by shielding me from lecturing and administrative work'"(Newsmakers). This showed that Hawking had the courage to continue on his life work, showing that even if you get knocked down you should come back with a smile on your face instead of letting something wither it all away. Although ALS severely disabled Hawking from simple everyday actions, he managed to persevere: "Physically, Hawking seems an unlikely subject for a distinction usually bestowed upon film stars and rock musicians. His body has been wasted by the cruel effects of a debilitating disease--his voice silenced, his ability to perform the simplest functions gone forever."(Detroit). Hawking became disabled but kept his life straight, never faltered, and continued in his work. Hawking shows us that even if life decides to set up barriers, we can all overcome them and find the things we are good at.

Stephen Hawking made his mark by overcoming ALS with a smile on his face and a book in his hand. Hawking's intelligence was something that was praised highly by his schoolmates, his professors, and later by his fellow scientists. Hawking's findings and discoveries were not what made him a hero to the world, it was his determination to get through ALS and continue to spread his findings and theories."Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."(George Bernard Shepard). Hawking is a hero because he continues to show that no matter what cards life hands us we can find something that we excel at and persevere through the challenges that come with it.
