Stephen Hawking

by Elijah from San Diego

From being a scrawny kid from London, Stephen Hawking grew up to be a world reknowned scientist. Hawking believes that everyone could make a difference, big or small had a purpose. Stephen's work in black holes has revolutionised science. Most scientists compare Hawking's work to that of Isaac Newton, or Albert Einstein. Stephen Hawking is a hero because he has revolutionised science and the black hole theory itself.

"Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford England. Stephen Hawking's earliest years were spent in Highgate, a London suburb. In 1950, when he was eight, the family moved to St. Albans, a cathedral town some twenty miles northwest of London. Two years later, his family enrolled him in St. Albans School, a private institution affiliated with the cathedral." His Friends and family would later describe him as kind of an outcast. "He was eccentric and awkward, skinny and puny. His school uniform always looked a mess and, according to friends, he jabbered rather than talked clearly, having inherited a slight lisp from his father" ("Stephen Hawking"). In 1958, Hawking and his friends built a computer that actually worked. "In the spring of 1959, Hawking won an open scholarship in natural sciences to University College Oxford, His father's old college and in October he enrolled there. It was at Oxford that his unusual abilities began to become more obvious" (Steven Hawking). Hawking then went on to graduate, marry and have kids. In 1965, Hawking married Jane Wilde, and they had two sons and a daughter. The couple split in 1990, and Hawking later married Elaine Mason. Hawking has lived a mostly normal life, his research on black holes would become the next part of his life.

Hawkings work in earth and space science has revolutionised the world, some scientist compare hawking's work to that of Galileo or Isaac Newton. "Hawking now asked whether there really had ever been a beginning to space-time (a big bang), or whether one state of affairs (one universe, to put it loosely) simply gave birth to another without beginning or end. Hawking suggested that new universes might be born frequently through little-understood anomalies in space-time. He also investigated string theory and exploding black holes, and showed mathematically that numerous miniature black holes may have formed early in the history of our universe" ("Stephen Hawking"). Hawking's groundbreaking research has brought many other scientist to study his theories. Hawking went on to write books about his research in black holes. "In 1988, Hawking's A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes was published. Intended for a general audience, it leapt onto best-seller lists in both America and Britain and remained there for several years" ("Stephen Hawking"). Hawking has written many bestselling books and doesn't show signs of stopping his research.

Stephen Hawking is a hero because he has revolutionised science for all americans. His groundbreaking work in black holes has led to more than 250 discoveries. "In 1973, he published a highly technical book, The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime, written with G. F. R. Ellis. Not long afterward, Hawking made a startling discovery: whereas virtually all previous thinking assumed that black holes could not emit anything, Hawking theorized that under certain conditions they could emit subatomic particles. These particles became known as Hawking Radiation" (" Stephen Hawking"). Stephen has also experienced space travel "In April, he went on a 90-minute Zero Gravity Corp. flight and experienced weightlessness eight separate times as the modified Boeing 727 flew to an altitude of 24,000 feet and then made a series of dives at a 45 degree angle. After returning to Earth, Hawking told Tampa Tribune reporter Kurt Loft "It was amazing. I could have gone on and on. Space, here I come." Hawking said that he hoped to go to space before the end of his life" ("Stephen Hawking"). Steven is now retired and taking a break from his research.

Stephen Hawking is a hero because he has revolutionised science in a way that no one else could. He involves himself to research the things that makes him happy. Stephen believes that anyone could be anything no matter what all they need is to believe. Hawking has become more of an idol than a scientist. He stands for something more than science.
