Sarah McLachlan's album "Surfacing" won two Grammys, four Juno Awards, and sold over 11 million copies, but the reason she is my hero is because she has helped people and animals. In 2005, she took part in a tsunami disaster relief telethon on NBC. She has helped with benefit concerts. She helped raise $3.6 million dollars by performing in a tsunami relief concert. She filmed a 2 minute commercial that raised $30 million dollars for the ASPCA. She performed concerts to try to help fight poverty in Africa, to help them get rid of their debts. She helped raise $500,000 for the outreach program that teaches inner city kids about music.

Sarah McLachlan was born on January 28, 1968. She was adopted in Halifax, Nova Scotia. When she was in high school, she joined a rock band. One of her high school yearbooks guessed she was "destined to become a famous rockstar." Before she got her recording contract, she decided to finish high school and complete a full year of studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design before she moved to Vancouver to become a recording artist. Two years later, she signed to Nettwerk. She hadn't even written a single song. In 1997, she married her drummer, Ashwin Sood. McLachlan's first daughter, India Ann Sushil Sood, was born on April 6, 2002. She gave birth to another daughter, Taja Summer Sood, on June 22, 2007. In 2008 Ashwin and Sarah separated.

I think Sarah is a hero because of what she does for others. She raised millions of dollars for tsunami relief, music education, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This shows what a great person she is. She has an amazing, strong voice. She is a wonderful singer. I hope that one day when I grow up I will have a good talent that I can use to raise money to help others.

“Having the opportunity to learn and perform music is significant in fostering creative development and in building confidence in a child,” said Campbell. “I commend Sarah McLachlan for her commitment to her Music Outreach project and for her gift of music to Vancouver’s youth.”

I think that what Sarah McLachlan does for everyone is wonderful. She has a good, strong voice and I appreciate that she uses it to help raise money for those who need it. I hope that one day when I grow up I will be like Sarah McLachlan.
