Samuel Mockbee

by Jesus from California

A hero is something to consider. He or she isn’t someone that saves lives, a hero can save anyone. A child’s imagination is for a hero to jump up, fly away, and save somebody with powers. Those times have changed. Someone doesn’t need powers to save others. Many people have courage and faith. They can change a negative situation into a positive outcome that can benefit others.

Samuel Mockbee was born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1944. Living in Mississippi, Mockbee grew up poor. He told himself to help people in need. He decided to be an architect. By 1974, Samuel Mockbee and a friend, Coleman Coker, both worked together to built houses for charity. The houses were not charged. While helping the poor families, Samuel established a group of people. It was called ‘The Rural Studio.’ It was a community for people who loved the art of construction. The program designs and builds houses for the poorest people in Alabama. The materials weren’t cheap so they all, including Samuel, used whatever was in site.

This whole thing was that he didn’t want the community that didn’t have homes to be left behind. Samuel Mockbee was so committed to his hobby that he won an award. The budget wasn’t so great. So he was awarded a grant from the Graham Foundation for the hard work he and his students contributed to the community of Alabama. This grant helped him and his crew to achieve greatness. Samuel Mockbee challenges himself to give it all and help others in peril. He cannot stop himself from helping others that are in trouble.

Samuel Mockbee is a hero to me because he strives to do his best. He’s one of a kind, a hero that truly benefits human society. That’s a hero in my book. Samuel Mockbee inspires me to do the best that I can, and reach the sky. He also gives others motivation to challenge their limit. He shows me that anything is possible. That we can accomplish anything that we set our minds to. We as humans, have a responsibility to accomplish our goals.

A hero isn’t just really a hero with powers. A hero needs to be dedicated to their goals. Anyone can reach what they want in life if others try their best. Superpowers do not matter. Generosity is a heroic quality. Selflessness is giving not taking. A hero doesn’t need a heroic cape, he needs a positive attitude.
