A hero to me is someone who is confident and smart. If you were a hero then you would need to be smart, meaning you have to know what you’re doing and being confident means you need to believe in yourself. My hero is Samuel Morse. He’s a hero because he invented the Morse code. In this essay I will prove that Samuel Morse was a hero because he is smart and cool.

Samuel Morse was born on April 27, 1791 and died on April 2, 1872. He lived in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He helped many people by inventing the telegraph which was a way to talk to people back in the 19th century. He was inspired by Jackson’s electromagnet to make the single wire telegraph. This was important because it was an easier way for instant communication.

My first activity that I’ll be focusing on is the invention of the single wired telegraph. This meets my definition because it was a cool invention and it was an easier way for communicating and a faster way too. He came up with the idea for using electricity for communication over a long distance. He was on a ship coming back from Europe in 1832 and came up with the idea. Samuel Morse finally built it in the 1844.

My second activity that I’ll be focusing on is the Morse code. This fits my definition because you would need to be smart in order to write messages and decode them. The Morse code is just dots and dashes that are decoded to get words, sentences, or numbers. The first sentence was done as a demonstration and it said, “What Hath God Wrought?” Right now there are 2 different kinds of Morse code, the American Morse Code and the General Service.

There weren’t many people who supported his idea because they thought it wouldn’t work. They didn’t do anything but say it wouldn’t work. They didn’t support him and when he tried to test it they would cancel it. He always kept trying and eventually after all the hard work Congress approved his invention. After two months of arguing and messing up he created a message to go to Baltimore. After that people started investing.
