Sally Ride was born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles. Sally Ride was a hero because in the 1970’s attention was on woman’s rights. Women’s rights were one reason NASA accepted applications from female scientists. Sally applied for NASA with 8,369 other people and only 1,000 were women. 1977 only 208 of the 1,000 applicants were asked to come back for interviews. Sally Ride was the first American woman in space. Sally Ride was the youngest American astronaut to circle the earth in a spacecraft. The attention on women’s rights made Sally Ride a hero.

By seventh or eighth grade she knew she was interested in science. Sally was reading Scientific American, which is a science magazine. Dr. Elizabeth Mommaerts introduced Sally to the scientific method. Sally had to play softball and volleyball to stay fit. She wrote articles and had a clubhouse for girls in elementary and middle school.

Sally Ride got many awards; she got a Jefferson award for public service. She also got two national space flight medals. She was put on the national women’s hall of fame and astronaut hall of fame.

Sally had a lot of traits; three of them are Intelligent- for graduating from Stanford University and she was trying really hard in high school. She is ambitious -she wanted to fulfill her dream to become a space women. Sally knew she could do anything she wanted to do when she was a little girl. Sally had to go back into the classroom and learn new things. She is also brave- Sally went out in space and she had to use fifty-foot robot arm the first time in space.

In conclusion Sally Ride was very brave and she is a role model to all the women in America. Also Sally tried very hard on the tennis court and in school. Sally had the chance to fulfill her dream to go into space.
