Sonya Tayeh

by Danica from Mission Viejo

“It is very important to me to be a mentor, an inventor and a historian of dance in our generation.” -Sonya Tayeh

Since I am a dancer, one of my favorite shows is So You Think You Can Dance. They have many amazing choreographers on that show but one of my favorites is Sonya Tayeh. She is a choreographer in a subject of contemporary. I’ve never seen movement like hers. I first noticed her when I was watching the show and she came up with an amazing dance that I couldn't stop watching. It was very unique and exciting to watch. I felt as if I was mesmerized by it. She is very easy to find since she’s known for her mullet-hawk look. She also always has interesting themes for her dances and they're always different and fierce.

Sonya is a choreographer for the show, So You Think You Can Dance. She also has her own company dance that tours around the world. Her company is called, the Tayeh Dance Company in Los Angeles. To be a dancer you should go to college and major in the arts and dance history because it will help you with your dancing. This is what she did. She gets paid for her company shows and to choreograph on shows. There isn’t an exact amount of money she gets but it is a lot. Many people look up to her and people that do meet her say she is inspiring and friendly.

Sonya was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Tayeh started dancing in college and graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in 2005. Some people think it is weird that she started so late in dance, but she was very committed and stuck with it. She grew to love it and studied her own body. She found movements of dance to be its own art and that is when she became a choreographer. After college people started noticing her because of how interesting her choreography was. She went to the MSA agency and right away her career lifted off.

Sonya's choreography has shown people that you can be unique and to make your own style of dance. In the world of dancing, a lot of people copy moves and blend together but Sonya’s style of dance is definitely different from everyone else’s. She has inspired me to find my own style and keep improving in dance. She never copies any styles of other dance and that is why her movement as so fascinating. She often gets her motivation for dances from super heroes or cartoons.

I plan to keep doing very well in school so I can get into a good college. I intend to keep dancing like I have been so I can get better and some day live up to my dream of being a dancer. My ultimate dream is to be on So You Think You Can Dance and meet Sonya. She definitely is my type of dancer and it inspires me every day to keep trying. I am going to take arts classes to learn about the different types of arts from the past and taking ROP dance classes at school to improve even more.
