On June 9, 1959, when Steven Truscott was 14, he was accused of raping and murdering his 12 year old classmate Lynne Harper. He was sentenced to be hung but it was postponed for an appeal.
He met her near the school after supper that day and she needed a lift to the bridge over the Bayfield River in Ontario. He left her on the side of the road because she wanted to go see the ponies. He left to go home but he saw a car pull up and Lynne got in the car. Two days later they found her dead body.
The police didn't believe him and were too lazy to go uncover any hidden evidence. During the trial the pathologist said that Lynne died between 7:00 and 7:45 PM and the jury had to believe him. There is no possible way that he would have known it was that much of a precise time.
Steven Truscott spent 10 years in jail. When he was let out of jail, he took a new name and lived his life. 250 new pieces of evidence were found and Steven Truscott was free of the conviction in 2007. He is a hero because he helped Canada to stop hanging people.
