Dudley Saltonstall

My hero is Dudley Saltonstall. I picked Dudley Saltonstall becuse he failed when others succeeded. Also many people blamed him but Saltonstall stayed strong. Many people don't know of Saltonstall because he had failed and we don't recodnize everyone involved in the Revolutionay War. Dudley Saltonstall was born in New London, Connecticut on September the 8th. Saltonstall died in the West Indies in the year 1798. Even after Saltonstall's defeat, he remained a patriot even though patriots acused him of messing up a very important mission.

Saltonstall was one of the head commanders of the Penobscot Expedition. The Penobscot Expedition was a naval plan or expedition that was supposed to overthrow British forces at Penobscot Bay, Maine. Although Saltonstall failed, other ships under command of different naval officers succeeded in attacking the British forces. The committee in charge of making sure the Penobscot Expedition was planned and carried out, blamed Dudley Saltonstall and bad communication. I do agree it was a shame about our naval fleet but I am happy that Saltonstall stayed strong when he was taken out of service.

Saltonstall commanded the ship called the Alfred. Dudley Saltonstall was there when the ship called the "Warren" was burned. The "Warren" was actually under Saltonstall's comand when it was burned. Many of Dudley Saltonstall's men were demoralized when they were defeated. Saltonstall's disastrous defeat put Boston in a debt of the almost unimaginable amount in those days of 7,000,000 dollars. After Saltonstall's disastrous mistake, he was taken out of service.

Paul Revere was also involved in the Penobscot Expedition. Many historians think it was the worst American naval defeat, until Pearl Harbor, and had a huge toll on the U.S. But we learn from these mistakes. If we didn't make mistakes, we couldn't even come close to perfection. The U.S has one of the best armies and navies in the world because we have learned from our mistakes.

I was very puzzled when I was assigned to work on a project involving Dudley Saltonstall because information about Dudley Saltonstall was scarce. I am glad to have been assigned to Dudley Saltonstall because I like challenges and this report was definitely a challenge but I was like Saltonstall and I stayed strong. I enjoyed learning about the naval battles because I enjoy naval battles. I think battles are more interesting at sea. I would recomend learning about Dudley Saltonstall because it was a very interesting experience and process learning about Saltonstall.
