Samarra

by Rebeka from Ontario, Canada

A hero to me is someone who has and always will be there for you and helps you and loves you no matter how many or how horrible your mistakes may be. I guess I could have a lot of heroes then, but the tone true hero of mine, the one who's been there for me the most is Samarra.

I've known Samarra from the age of 4. I still remember fighting over the pink and purple 'marbles' at pre-school, but we were never really friends until grade 2. Since grade 2 she's saved my life many times - not from any danger, but from myself. I've never really been 100% normal and I've made too many mistakes to remember them all. Many I wish I could forget but Samarra has helped me through nearly each and every single one of them. Even after a huge fight that left us both furious, upset and hurt for a year she has still come back to be there for me. Even when we were fighting she still desperately wanted to help me when things went wrong. If my world shattered she was right with me picking up pieces and gluing them back together.

I've screwed up many times but none as bad as last fall (2006), where I began to cut myself and got involved with bulimia, and eventually landed myself in the hospital after overdosing on prescribed medication. Nearly all of my friends were begging me to stop; I was destroying myself. I stopped the bulimia but continued the cutting (I only recently stopped). I can't say Samarra was the only person who was there for me but I can say that she was there for me the longest, that I trust her more than anyone else and if anything goes wrong she's the first person I tell.

I know Samarra doesn't run around in spandex tights saving the world, although it'd be cool if she did, but she's still amazing and she's still my hero.
