Do you agree that a hero is someone who saved a person or survived through a very tough time? My hero was hero was a person who helped save a whole country. My opinion is that my hero did as much as she could have done for Africa. My hero is Mary Slessor.

She was born in 1848 and she died in 1876. She was born in Gilcomston, Scotland. As a young girl she worked in factories to help support her family. While she was growing up she was very poor. When she got older she wanted to go to Africa and help bring civilization to Africa. Mary and her brother said when they were young that they both were going to go on the trip to Africa, but her brother did not survive through all those years to go so Mary had to decide that she was going to go by herself. Here is the story of how she got to Africa and what she did in Africa.

Mary Slessor went to Africa and started teaching and giving people an education when she went to the mission station to wait. When Mary first got there she needed a translator because she did not yet know the local language. Once she learned the language, she walked alone even though the people said it was more dangerous to travel alone. But Mary found it easier to meet people if she was alone. She was moving around Africa to find people who needed help and needed Mary to give them an education. The farther she got away she got from the mission station, the more needs people had. The missionary taught not to kill the wives and slaves of a husband when he dies. She showed housewives better ways to fix food and keep homes and children clean. After she was there for a while she caught a tropical disease. When she had the disease, a couple of times she felt like she was going to die. She went home and survived the disease and then came back to Africa when she was better. Mary Slessor is such a big hero because she brought a civilization to Africa.

Mary Slessor, to me, was a hero for all time. I say that Mary Slessor is a hero for all time because she brought civilization and education to Africa and that civilization and education will be there for a very long time if not forever.

Now do you have a different idea on what a hero? You should know that a hero is someone not always someone who saves a life, a hero is most of the time someone who goes through a very hard time. I hope you realize that is what a hero is most of the time.
