Joseph DeVeuster was born on January 3, 1840 in Tremelo, Belgium.

When Joseph grew up he chose to be a priest.

Joseph’s brother, Pamphile, was a priest. He was supposed to go to Hawaii, but he got sick.
Damien begged to take his place and go to Hawaii.

Joseph DeVester became a priest in Hawaii on May 21, 1864. He took the name Father Damien. The people of Hawaii called Father Damien “Kamiano.”
