The Terminal
by Alfred Stieglitz (1864 - 1946)
Photography and Film
Stieglitz took this photo with a 4 X 5" camera, a tool that, at the time, was considered unworthy of artistic aspirations. Forgoing the unwieldy 8 X 10" view camera and its required tripod, Stieglitz was able to move easily through the urban settings he hoped to capture. The Terminal predates by nearly a decade the transformation of the medium from "painterly prints of rarified subjects" to capturing everyday moments and ordinary people living their lives.
