Terry Fox was an ordinary person. Until he started his Marathon of Hope. This is the story of his life. Terry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on July 28th, 1958. Terry was a very active child. He always was active. He had 3 siblings, 2 brothers; Darrell and Fred, and his sister, Judith. His mom was named Betty, his dad was named Rolly. He went to Simon Frasier University.
At the age of 18, he was diagnosed with a bone cancer called osteogenic-sarcoma. He had to get his leg amputated 6 inches above his knee. At the hospital, he saw many kids with cancer. He was fine with his own cancer, but when he saw the children, his heart imploded. He couldn't imagine people his age and younger suffering from cancer. That`s when he first had a thought about the run.
Terry had started his run on April 12, 1980. He was very stubborn to not let his mom stop him from starting the run. Terry Fox started running in a small town in Newfoundland. He raised about a dollar from everyone living there, in the small town. Then he thought, "If we can get a dollar from every person living in the town, why can't we do it on a bigger scale?", Then he set a goal of $27m and continued his run.
He ran across the Trans-Canada highway till he was at Quebec. In Quebec, a police officer pulled him over for running on the freeway. The officer said that "he had to use the small roads". But he still kept running on the freeway. Once he reached Ontario, everybody knew about him. They ran with him, talked to him, etc. This was because a person in Toronto (I have forgotten who he was) had organised it. He had met with him before he reached Toronto to organize things etc. Terry had also met his hero, Bobby Orr in Toronto. Bobby Orr was a professional NHL player. He had also had a dinner at the CN Tower with his family. But the next day when he was running, he had trouble breathing.
It turned out the cancer had spread to his lungs. He said he would have to go back home and receive chemotherapy. Once he had recovered, "he would continue running". That unfortunately did not happen.
After several days of chemotherapy, Terry Fox was pronounced dead in June 28, 1991. He was a very brave man. Though his own run was over, people kept running.
Terry was very determined, even now there has been no-one who ever tried to run across Canada. He was also very stubborn; his mom was trying to stop him from going. Terry was full of courage too! His whole run had lots of courage!
Terry Fox had inspired me to never stop developing video games, many of my early alpha`s had failed, and some of my unplayable/unfinished projects had coding issues because of software updates. But I never stopped, revamp after revamp. I still have these problems right now, but I never stopped because I was inspired to keep trying by Terry Fox. He is very inspiring.
