Temple Grandin

by Elisabeth from Fort Collins

Imagine understanding the perspective of a cow, being threatened by everything in your surroundings, because of autism. Courage, endurance, and dedication are the words that describe the hero, Mary Temple Grandin. Her story has impacted my life by showing me that I should not give up.

Courage means having strength in hard times, or the ability to do something that scares you. Temple Grandin has certainly done both. People may not stand with her because she is autistic, but she does not stop because of that. She speaks at many events and classes, one of them my dad went to. Though she was made fun of in middle and high school for repetitive speech, she has come far, like becoming a veterinarian and writing many books .

Endurance is another quality of Temple Grandin. Though there are many struggles with Autism, like the inability to understand the social communication of people with normal neural development, or having a hard time understanding socializing of people without Autism,  Temple has overcome the obstacles of being Autistic. Getting her voice heard was a struggle because she is different, and different is not always accepted. She also went to college for a degree in psychology and a masters in animal science.

Temple Grandin shows dedication. She has written many books, such as Thinking in Pictures, Animals in Translation, and many more. She won a "Proggy" award for working with slaughterhouses and livestock farms. She also designs corrals and shoots that are better for cattle for the slaughterhouses.

Mary Temple Grandin has widened the spectrum for people far and wide about animals and autism. She displays the heroic qualities in an awe inspiring way. Her story has taught us that we should never give up, no matter the obstacle. We should all try to learn from her example.
