Tony Gwynn

Going...Going...Gone! Tony Gwynn knocks the requirement of being a hero out of the park. Literally. Gwynn was a San Diego Legend who grew up in Long Beach and went to school there. Then moved onto SDSU on scholarships for baseball and basketball(1978). Getting drafted by the San Diego Padres(1981). He set many records, received many awards and is in the Hall of Fame for baseball(2004). In today's society a hero must portray many character traits such as, compassion for others, perseverance, and generosity. Tony Gwynn is all of the above and then some. Mr.Gwynn compels the traits of generosity and compassion for others by starting the Tony Gwynn Foundation, a foundation that helps 100,000-1,000,000 less fortunate youth daily. Gwynn shows his perseverance by setting records and playing a professionals while struggling through many injuries. Tony Gwynn dying on June 16, 2014. Physically not here, but his legacy will live on for forever.

Gwynn's generosity and giving back to his community made him an exceedingly compassionate person. "The Tony & Alicia Gwynn (TAG) Foundation is dedicated to providing financial and educational resources to underserved members of our San Diego community and around the world"("Gwynndustries").Tony Gwynn and his foundation help 100,000s of people daily. He started this program give back to the city that gave him. Him helping youth and family shows that he is caring, generous,and loves to get back to those less fortunate. Not only is he giving he is a loving person. "He is also an affable, easy going person, always attentive to the media and the fans. Tony and Alicia Gwynn are famous for their charitable work with young people. Tim Kurkjian of Sports Illustrated once called Gwynn "probably the most popular and successful player in San Diego sports history... one of baseball's most good-natured people"(Jr.). This author is explaining how Loved Gwynn was, you're not this loved unless you did great things,and were a great person. Gwynn is a loving, caring, generous person,he started the Tony Gwynn Foundation, that helps so many people daily. These traits portray why Tony Gwynn is a hero.

Gwynn's success in the sport and strive to be the best even while suffering major illnesses like cancer proves his perseverance and his will made him a hero. "Tony Gwynn was one of the greatest hitters in the history of Major League Baseball. In 20 seasons (1982-2001) with the San Diego Padres, Gwynn won a National League record-tying eight batting titles and was selected to 16 All-Star teams. He was the first-ever unanimous selection to the Padres Hall of Fame, and the team retired his number 19 jersey in 2004." Gwynn was a phenomenal player and person. Everything he did he did with a purpose. His strive to be the best showed on the field. Gwynn along playing well, played fantastically while even injured. "In his 20-year career, Gwynn - the eight-time National League Batting champion - had 10 knee surgeries, including four of the major variety. Over the last part of his career, he was held together by surgical sutures, knee drains and deep-tissue rubs"(Tony Gwynn). Mr.Gwynn managed to continue through all that pain. Teaching everyone what you can achieve if you believe and put in the work. "I played with a bad Achilles' (in 1997) and shouldn't have played the second half of the season. But I did. I tore knee cartilage and shouldn't have played, but I did. I sucked it up. 'The way I looked at it was, 'Was I productive?' The answer was always 'yes"(Gwynn). Tony Gwynn managed persist through all that pain. Teaching everyone what you can achieve if you believe and put in the work. Tony Gwynn is a hero because, a hero is someone who sets an example for others. Gwynn does exactly that by playing through injuries, persevering, and being a good guy too.

Tony Gwynn accomplishing the things he's done in life makes him a hero. The magnanimity he poses for others, creating a foundation that helps many daily. Many unfortunate. Tony also shows many how to persevere. He played countless games on injuries still becoming one of the players ever. "Major League Baseball today mourns the tragic loss of Tony Gwynn, the greatest Padre ever and one of the most accomplished hitters that our game has ever known, whose all-around excellence on the field was surpassed by his exuberant personality and genial disposition in life. Tony was synonymous with San Diego Padres baseball, and with his .338 career batting average and eight batting titles, he led his beloved ballclub to its greatest heights, including two National League pennants"( Allan H.Bud). I everyday am inspired by Mr.Gwynn and his accomplishments. His push, to be the best at what he does. He should inspire you too, there's nothing about him you wouldn't want to be. Tony Gwynn is a modern-day hero, he is a giving, loving, striving person, who is an example to many and is "Mr.Padre."
