Tana Umaga was born in Lower Hutt. His mum and dad are Samoan. As he grew up, he started playing rugby league. He made it into the Wellington Under 16 and Under 17 teams and was named in the Junior Kiwis in 1991. The same year he signed up with the Newcastle Knights to play in Australia. But 3 weeks later he felt sick and soon he was back on the plane to New Zealand. Tana Umaga's brother Mike told him to take up rugby union. Tana and Mike played each other in a match and Tana scored 2 tries.

Tana Umaga is my hero because he trained hard and ended up as All Black captain and now is a coach in France. It shows that if you work hard enough you will be something great.
