Vera

by Kay-Lee from Blackstone Valley Prep

A hero is someone who's always there by your side when you need them the most. My mom is the 1st person that people call when they need help. She's like their superhero. She's always there when they need her. My mom has inspired me to become independent in order to succeed in life, to always persevere through tough times, and to never give up on yourself.

My mom came from Cape Verde to America at the age of 12 to go to school. That wasn't easy or fun. When my mom was in college her grandma died. She was like a mother figure to my mom. She cared for her when her parents didn't. My mom was devastated and didn't believe the news when she was first told. Though her grandma died my mom still thought of her whenever she accomplished anything in life and gives her credit for everything that happened in her life. Though she missed her dearly she kept moving on in life thinking about what she had in life and not what she'd lost.

My mom was still holding one grudge. She still hadn't made up with her dad. She wanted to get back at him for making her his least favorite, not being there for her when she really needed him, and for separating her from her family. One day my little brother asked her why we didn't have a grandpa from her side and one from my dad's side. My grandfather had last visited when my little brother was only a baby so he didn't remember him. When my brother said that my mom felt bad so she called him and asked him to come over. She hadn't expected him to come over but he did and they talked for a while. My dad still hadn't met my grandfather so on Christmas Eve he surprised us with a visited he met my dad for the first time. Since that day my mom has no grudges left with her dad.

My mom might not have done anything huge, but to me she inspires me to be who I am every day of my life. She left behind all the love and comfort from her family just so she could teach others what she's learned. She made up with her dad, someone that she's been holding a grudge about for 30 years! She might think that when I grow older I'll forget about her but what she doesn't know is that she's always on my mind 24/7. My mom still has big dreams. She plans on going back to college. This time for social working. She figures that she might as well use her talent for more than just helping people she knows but for everyone and anyone she comes across. As my mom always says, "When you have a talent, use it or lose it".
