"Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts" (Winston Churchill). This brilliant phrase spoken by Winston Churchill embodies his steadfast attitude. Deemed a disappointment by his father, Churchill traveled the path of a military career. His numerous political and military experiences, from a measly foot soldier to the head of the British Navy, prepared him for the position of Prime Minister and leader of Britain in World War II (1889-1945). During some of Europe's darkest days, Churchill managed to ignite a spark of hope and faith in his people with his powerful speeches. With the aid of the United States and Russia, Churchill prevented a Nazi victory in the war, bringing the world peace and freedom from Adolph Hitler. Through his extensive accomplishments, Churchill displayed traits of unyielding determination, unparalleled brilliance, and selfless courage that served as an inspiration to people worldwide.

Churchill's steady determination propelled him into becoming one of Britain's most compelling leaders. When Europe teetered on the brink of war, King George VI requested Churchill to become the Prime Minister of Britain. Instead of cowering down from the challenge, Churchill took the job with a rare confidence and resolve: "...the somber yet determined statesman embarked on what would prove to be the most challenging journey in his life and in the history of his nation. 'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat,' he remarked upon taking office. 'Let us go forward together with our united strength'" (Winston Churchill). The somber commander did not back down from the daunting position, despite the grueling challenges and immense danger the title would bring. The bold words spoken as he took office displayed his unbreakable will, and the effort he would exhaust to save his country, Determined to give all he had to improve the fate of Britain, Churchill inspired his country to unite and fight .victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival." During some of Britain's darkest times, Churchill managed to put a spark in his people- a spark of hope, determination, and pride. To Churchill, absolute victory was the only acceptable outcome, because the consequences of defeat were unthinkable. His determination inspired the British people to never give up at any costs.

With extraordinary intelligence, Churchill carefully maneuvered Britain into victory. He was the first one to notice the dark road that Europe was headed towards: "Churchill's speeches created a storm of protest and controversy in the West, but events soon confirmed his views of world events and the rapidly developing "cold war." (Winston Churchill). The negativity and opposition that resulted from Churchill's claim threw the West into an outrage, but he believed strongly in his observation and chose to stand by it. He was observant and clever enough to notice the few threads of suspicion within Europe, which turned out to be accurate. In addition to his ingenuity vigilance, Churchill was also a well-rounded leader that guided Britain with diligence and a touch of perfection: "When he was not busy bolstering the spirits of his fellow Britons, Churchill--an impatient perfectionist with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy--was directing virtually every aspect of England's war effort. He personally ran the army, navy, and the air force and never hesitated to become involved in other areas that interested him, an unorthodox style of management that nevertheless had the full backing of the country"(Winston Churchill). Churchill managed to operate all of Britain's military forces effectively, while taking concern in other areas which interested him. Although the astounding amount of work and responsibility would have overwhelmed most people, Churchill directed it all with a steady control and brilliance. Churchill's intelligence and vigorous attitude played a major factor in Britain's victory in WWII.

During the war, Churchill became the light of courage that guided the British through the depression and anguish of war. He would personally enter war areas and support his people: "Donning a special "siren suit" of his own design, Churchill regularly ventured out into the streets of London after (and sometimes during) air raids to tour bomb sites and offer moral support to the local residents." Instead of observing the chaos from afar, Churchill connected with his people by supporting them in times of hardship. He was unafraid of risking his life to ensure the safety of his people. Churchill courageously rallied his troops to unite and fight against the common enemy, the Nazi's: "We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender" (Winston Churchill). When the British were cowering at the thought of facing Germany alone, Churchill urged them to not lose faith, and continue to defend their country. His courage and certainty influenced the thoughts of his people and established a unique trust between them. The British viewed him as a hero to look towards in times of despair and misery. He possessed unwavering, fearless bravery that motivated his country and makes him an inspiring role model.

As a reporter for the Newsweek noted: "'...there was the feeling that somehow Winston Churchill had a hand in shaping the course of virtually every life. He was the one man who had infinite confidence when few others could see any reason to hope. He was the unshakeable rock that rooted the world through a difficult time.'" Churchill was an impactful, eminent leader that inspired people everywhere to stand firm eve in the face of fear. He channeled his beliefs through striking words and potent speeches. Uniquely stirred by the challenge of war, Churchill found his fulfillment in leading the democracies to victory. As a writer for Time put it, "Today's rulers seem, in comparison, faceless and mediocre. Churchill was an aristocrat, a brilliant dilettante, a creator in a dozen roles and garbs. He was a specialist in nothing--except courage, imagination, intelligence. He was never afraid to lead, and he knew that a leader must sometimes risk failure and disapproval rather than seek universal acclaim." Churchill is now a role model for future leaders, as his daring and fearless outlook brought Britain victory and freed the world from Hitler's strangling clutches. When all hope seemed lost, Churchill was the singular being who had absolute confidence in redeeming Britain's future. His belief in a promising future inspired his people to unite and subdue their common enemy. Churchill was a blaring lighthouse; guiding his country over the treacherous waters of war and into the dock of peace and tranquility. Possessing the ability to gain the faith and trust of countless people and to remain steadfast in the face of failure makes Churchill a true hero.
