Winston Churchill

by Cody from San Diego

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. (Winston Churchill) He led Britain to victory, not because he won every battle, but because he didn't stop after a lost one. For the majority of his life, he was in Britain, and while he was the prime minister, he would help defend Britain against German air attacks and helped coordinate the evacuation of Dunkirk. Heroes are Courageous, Selfless, determined to achieve their goals. Winston Churchill was many things, such as being courageous, an excellent leader, and extremely inspirational, all characteristics of a hero.

Winston Churchill is a hero because of his valiant courage during World War 2. Churchill was dedicated to his country and doing anything he could to protect Britain: "Aging, he traveled at the expense of his health to major conferences in Washington, D.C., Cairo, Casablanca, Moscow, Teheran, Yalta, and Potsdam." (Historic World Leaders.) Churchill was very courageous to risk his own health to rally allies and attend major meetings in different countries. His dedication to winning the war against Germany was incredible, and took insane amounts of bravery to do for one's country and to disregard one's health. Churchill wasn't just the man in control from afar. While Britain was being bombed by Germany, "Churchill regularly ventured out into the streets of London after (and sometimes during) air raids to tour bomb sites and offer moral support to the local residents." (Contemporary Heroes and Heroines.) Churchill's lack of fear inspired people around him and, in turn, offered moral support to victims of the German bombings. His courageousness was incredible to the people around him and allowed him to rally the British people against the Germans. Winston Churchill's Decisions he made for his country, sometimes at the cost of himself, showed how brave he was and how devoted he was to his country.

Winston Churchill was one of Britain's greatest prime ministers due to his leadership and ability to actually lead a country through a war. He had taken a tremendous amount of work during the war because, "He personally ran the army, navy, and the air force and never hesitated to become involved in other areas that interested him, an unorthodox style of management that nevertheless had the full backing of the country."(Contemporary Heroes and Heroines.) Churchill was dedicated to Britain's war efforts against Germany and the defense of Britain. He devoted himself to leading Britain to victory through his involvement of every aspect of the military and struggle against Germany. Churchill was more than just a hard worker: "In general I think his dominant characteristics were these: his genius as an administrator, his capacity for hard work and his magnanimity of mind."(Olsen, John David.) He was a great leader, with his dedication to his country, his ability to work hard and affectionate mind. A recipe for a great leader, and a great leader he was. His life as a prime minister and actions during the war allowed him to lead his country through the war, through to victory, proving his leadership.

Winston Churchill was, all-in-all, an inspiration person, from his speeches to the public to his brave action in the state. Winston Churchill did not retire, even when he could of, because of his duty to his country: "At the age of sixty-five--an age when most people are looking forward to retirement--the somber yet determined statesman embarked on what would prove to be the most challenging journey in his life and in the history of his nation." (Contemporary Heroes and Heroines.) Churchill did not let his age get in the way of him leading the nation. He didn't give up because he was getting to old for it, but he continued on, not for himself, but for his country. Winston Churchill had many attributes, from his courage and leadership but, "One of Winston Churchill's chief attributes as a leader was his capability of inspiring people, regardless of seemingly ominous circumstances." (Olsen, John David.) His ability to use words and speeches to rally the British people was incredible. Being able to inspire people so well is in itself, inspiring to me. Winston Churchill had amazing speaking abilities, being able to calm a country after an attack, to inspiring people to fight back; he was inspiring to not only me, but countless others.

Winston Churchill's ability as a leader, actions of courage, and skill to inspire is the epitome of a hero. Churchill was determined to defend and serve his country through his choice to take on a huge workload, being involved in almost every aspect of Britain's defense. He would sacrifice his own health to coordinate with Britain's allies and he would inspire an entire nation to not give up and to fight back. He was a hero to his country. Winston Churchill inspires me due to his leadership of a country and his willingness to sacrifice his own health for his countries allies. Winston Churchill, the man who led Britain, protected Britain, served Britain, inspiring, calming, and rallying the British people. He truly was a hero, to more than just me.
