Walt Disney was a very artistic man and started an amazing business. He loved to draw as I do but I will never be as good as him. Walt created many cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse. One day I would love to be able to draw like him. This 160 page long biography was written by Barbara Ford and covered his whole life from 1901 to 1966. It was written in 1989.
Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. When he was 5 years old he moved to Missouri with his family. Walt Disney's parents were named Flora and Elias. Walt had 4 siblings. Walt's closest brother was named Roy and he also had two older brothers named Herbert and Raymond. Walt also had a sister named Ruth. Walt started going to the new Park School of Marceline at 8 years old. Then in 1911 Walt attended the Benton Grammar School in Kansas City but had to go through grade 2 again. When Walt was done with elementary school he went to McKinley High and took night courses at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. At 16 years old (grade 10) he dropped out of high school. Walt would usually draw in his free time, he loved it so much that whenever he ran out of paper he would draw on toilet paper. He would sell his drawings to neighbours for about 50 cents (Now the equivalent of 13 dollars). Once, he and his sister Ruth drew on the side of the house with a bucket of tar, thinking it would come off, when no one was home.
When Walt grew up he was often bankrupt. He was always running out of money to make a film or a cartoon. His dad had anger issues that Walt inherited when he was older so he would get mad at his employees at even the smallest mistakes. Walt's dad was always be mad at him and would whip him with a belt for being bad or making mistakes. When Walt was about 15 he stood up to his dad and said "No! No more." Walt had a lot of help from his brother Roy in making decisions and making films. He learnt a lot of his drawing skills from a man named Ubbe Iwerks, Walt and Ubbe enjoyed working together and started a company named Iwerks Disney. Walt Disney has won may awards throughout his career. For example he has won 32 Academy Awards and 22 Oscars (more than anyone ever) as well as many other awards.
In this book I learnt many things about Walt Disney. I learnt that he had 3 brothers and a sister but not a happy family life. I also realized how hard he worked to establish his legacy which has continued for more than 50 years and will continue forever. If I ever met Walt Disney i would definitely faint but I'd ask him: How he kept going and never gave up. How he managed to keep everyone happy. And could he teach me how to draw as well as he did. I wouldn't want to be his child because he had an anger issues and died early at the age of 65. I didn't like the book much because I thought it lacked information. It wasn't detailed enough during the more interesting parts yet it was too detailed in others. I realized that I should never get angry at anyone, even for the smallest mistakes. I loved reading and finding out more about Walt Disney as I have always appreciated his work and have seen many Disney movies and have been to Disneyland but I will appreciate them much more now.
