Wayne Gretzky wasn't just one of the best hockey players of all time, he was also a hero to many around the world. He inspired many people by giving them the opportunity to play and learn about hockey and by being one of the best hockey players in the world, as well as a good role model. Gretzky even said the commonly known phrase "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" (Gretzky). Also, thousands of children around the world look up to him as their hero. He wasn't as fast as some players but his skills are what made him better than others. As Wayne developed these skills, he became widely known as the greatest hockey player in the world. As he played in the NHL he played for 3 different teams.
Wayne's didn't have an ordinary life. At the age of two, he started skating. When he was 6, he started playing real hockey. Finally when he was around 17 when he started playing in the NHL. Considered to be one of the best hockey players around, he was nicknamed "The Great One". Additionally, he also had a foundation to educate kids about hockey.
Wayne's life outside of the hockey arena was helping others. "The Wayne Gretzky Foundation believes that hockey instills many positive life skills and helps to the physical, emotional and social growth of young people." (Gretzky). His foundation supported the idea that hockey has a positive impact on lives and provides children with many different life skills. He also supplied them with hockey equipment, including jerseys, hockey bags, and hockey sticks. Wayne was a very accomplished person.

In conclusion, a hero is someone that does a deed to benefit someone else. They stand in their community for their work and are great role models. Gretzky fits the definition because one of the deeds he did to benefit someone else was the Wayne Gretzky foundation. The Wayne Gretzky foundation helped kids start and learn about the sport of Hockey.
