Wilt Chamberlain

by Mecham from New Haven, Connecticut

I believe a hero is someone who is committed to doing something and setting an example. A hero is a leader who gives people the enthusiasm to do something good with their life. People often live their lives based on or to honor that hero. Also a hero could be someone who did something incredible such as break a world record. Basically a hero is someone to admire.

My hero is Wilt Chamberlain. He was a four-time MPV during his career. He held a point average of 50 and over the course of the 1961-62 season. They say he is the best player to play on the NBA courts. He led the Lakers to two championships, in 1967 and 1972.

Wilt started playing basketball in Shoemaker Junior High in New York. Then he moved on to Overbrook High in his senior year. He scored 91 points in a single game against Roxborough High School. Wilt got recruited to a college basketball team called the Kansas Jayhawks in the midwest.

Wilt became the NCAA tournament MPV in 1957. During Wilt's senior year in college he realized that he wasn't able to join the NBA, so he decided to join the Harlem Globetrotters for a year. After joining the L.A. Lakers, Wilt became the rebound king, having 21,722 rebounds as of Jan.30, 1972. After basketball, Chamberlain has sponsored his personal professional volleyball and track and field teams, and also provided high-level teams for girls and women in basketball, track, volleyball and softball.
