What is a hero?  This a comment addressed by the public in many ways.  Well, a hero does not have to have superpowers, nor does a hero have to have the position of a president.  To me a hero is a person who changes society without inhumane qualities.  A hero has a character of what he does when people aren't watching.  One example is Wilt Chamberlain. There are three qualities that make Wilt a hero.  He was confident and willing.  These qualities gave Wilt the title of being one of the greatest players in the NBA.

Wilton Norman Chamberlain, otherwise known as "Wilt" Chamberlain was born on August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Wilt Chamberlain made a difference by making African Americans famous in the sport of basketball.  Due to his incredible height and length, he broke records one game after another and people were starting to recognize the sport of basketball.  Not only did he help pave the way for African Americans in this sport, but he made basketball itself a famous sport for people to watch and play.  He was confident in himself by taking so much discrimination throughout his early life, but by the time he entered the NBA he had proven that anyone could play in the "big leagues" and he became one of the greatest 50 players to ever play in the NBA.

I thought of Wilton as a hero for many reasons.  First of all, I probably wouldn't be playing basketball today if it weren't for him.  He opened the doors for other races of people to play, by becoming such a big figure in sports.  People respected him.  His actions inspire me by allowing me to also make a difference by doing things other than sports that could make a difference in the world, and becoming a hero just like him.  Wilt Chamberlain fits my definition of hero because he made a change in society.  He also fits into my definition of hero by overcoming obstacles throughout his life.  Wilton grew up in a racially mixed neighborhood.  He defied the odds and had an outstanding career in the NBA.  He is a source of inspiration for me because Wilt Chamberlain was recruited by more than two hundred universities for his talents in basketball. This is an inspiration for me because I also want to be recruited by multiple colleges, maybe not for my athleticism in sports, but for my hard work in school.   Wilton Norman Chamberlain is very inspirational and a hero to me, because of his effects on the world today.

In conclusion, Wilt Chamberlain's qualities of being confident and willing make him a hero.  He fits my definition of hero, and serves as inspiration to me.  When people read about his story, they will then realize that a hero does not have to have inhumane like powers, but they will understand that a hero can be a regular guy who overcame obstacles to make a difference in the world.  Wilton Norman Chamberlain will always be a hero for me.
