Guy Weadick was born in 1885, in Rochester, New York and died in Wyoming in 1953. He was the World's Greatest Cowboy and was the founder of the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth," The Calgary Stampede.
He ran away from home when his mother died. After, he traveled by horse and wagon to the western U.S. He developed a love for cowboy living and became a rodeo performer. He soon migrated north and settled in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1912. He met H.C. McMullen, a live stock agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway. They both created a frontier show. They envisioned a Cowboy Championship and the celebration would honour the cowboys and ranchers of the Wild West. He requested the help of George Lane, Pat Burns, A.E. Cross, and Archie MacLean.
The Stampede was a hit! The crowd Loved the contests, the parade, and the rewards. In fact, The Calgary Stampede was such a hit, it's still going on today and even things have been added.
Following on the success of The Stampede, Weadick continued promoting his Old West shows. He stayed with the Stampede for the next 20 years- attracting the best Rodeo performers, starting the first chuckwagon races, and offering even bigger rewards.
Over time, the stampede shifted its schedule to 10 days in July. Although he spent a lot of time going around the world advertising his old west shows, Guy Weadick will be best remembered by Albertans as the Father of the Calgary Stampede: The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
